Everything Changes

None of these buildings still remains, but perhaps you can tell where they were by the fountain at the lower center. It has moved but still exists.

This photo from about 1889 shows three buildings in various stages of their architectural lives. At left, the First Methodist Church was later remodeled with a Romanesque façade. The prominent building at center left was then the YMCA but had previously been a Greek Revival temple when it was First Baptist Church. To its right stood the Mason’s Hall which withstood many make-overs before it burned in 1997. The Fireman’s Fountain at the base of what would later be Monument Terrace is seen in the foreground.

Next Week: Next Monday’s Mystery Picture features a house that had once been a college. Do you remember it?
